Creative Arts Discovery and Practice

Your playful and artistic urges can lead you to a rich, authentic, and more connected way of living. This six-week class will provide a generous opportunity to truly drop down into the river of creativity running just below the surface of your daily life. It can quench your spirit and answer your soul’s longing.

Using an array of art materials and playful practices, students will be gently guided in step-by-step processes designed to build comfort in expressing their own visual and kinetic language. Emphasis is on exploration and experimentation rather than product, and the non-judgmental practices of listening and allowing. In addition to visual media, we use breath, movement, sound, writing, meditation, and poetry to shift into the quiet space from which art simply flows.

  • Six Thursdays, March 9 - April 13; 10 am - 2 pm, led by Kelly Falzone

    Long Circle

    facilitated by Susie Garland

If you’re going to be an artist, all life is your subject. All your experience is part of your art. A youngster told me recently that he was going to give himself a year to see if he has talent. A year! It takes a lifetime to see what you have. Art is total engagement.
    ~ Ben Shahn

In our abundant and busy lives, it is challenging to find opportunities to deeply explore our creative impulses. Long Circle is your opportunity! It is LONG in that we have the luxury of time to dive deep into Art & Soul’s practices of play, authentic movement, sounding, and intuitive art making. These practices allow us to slip out of our everyday mind and drop down into a more centered listening space out of which creation flows. It is a CIRCLE because we create in community. We share the weekend with fellow explorers in an atmosphere of safety and non-judgment. We are all creative beings, each with our own medium and unique voice. We are writers, dancers, story tellers, painters, crafters, players, and much more. Join the circle. You will be glad you did!

We recommend that students first take the Creative Arts Discovery & Practice class before signing up for Long Circle, but if you feel you are ready, please contact us.

    Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help, Continued

    taught by Sarah Anderson

Jin Shin Jyutsu is the ancient healing art of balancing the body's energies. We all have the capacity to harmonize physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual imbalances using our own two hands.

This class will pick up where the February introductory class left off. We will cover the rest of Mary Burmeister's recommended daily self-help flows, including the Anterior Ascending and Descending Energy Flows and the Posterior Descending Energy Flow. The class is intended to be experiential, and you will be lying down (or sitting comfortably in a chair) for part of the session.

Though this class will be a follow-up to the introductory class, the basics of Jin Shin Jyutsu will also be covered, so all are welcome. If it is possible for you to bring Jin Shin Jyutsu Self-Help Book 1, it will help you follow along with the material, but the book is not required to take the class.

Please see jsjnashville.com for further details about this practice and about Sarah.

    Date & Time
    Sunday, March 12, 1 - 3 pm

    Fee
    $25 (Members $20)

Monthly Drawing Class with Guest Artist Michael Damico

Guest artist Michael Damico joins Art & Soul for a special series of once-a-month Saturday afternoon drawing classes open to all skill levels. Come on your own or bring a friend for an early evening out in 12th South!

Students will warm up for class through contour drawing methods such as blind, two-hand, and non-dominant hand drawing techniques and then learn how to apply those methods, and the artistic understanding they develop, through still life drawing activities. You’ll learn what parts of a still life to draw first, and how to use string measurements to discover ratio for accurate drawing.

Students will be encouraged to keep a journal to track progress, which will aide Michael in providing 1:1 feedback to help you build a drawing language, enhance your strengths, and remove limitations. Michael has the unique ability to see through your lens in order to help you sort through confusion and discover what you are trying to find or create in your artwork. While the class is most beneficial in a cumulative form, newly curious artists at all stages are welcome to jump in at any time.

Participants are asked to bring the following supplies:
~ Charcoal pencils: soft, medium, hard (5 of each)
~ Prismacolor Magic Rub Eraser (specifically this brand)
~ Large newsprint pad (18” x 24” at least, but larger is better)
~ Utility knife (box-cutter style with trapezoidal razor blade)
    ~ Optional: compressed charcoal squares
    Class registration required. No drop-ins.

    Date & Time
Saturdays, March 11; April 1, 4:30 - 6:00 pm (more dates to be added)

    Fee
