Creative Arts Discovery and Practice

Your playful and artistic urges can lead you to a rich, authentic, and more connected way of living. This six-week class will provide a generous opportunity to truly drop down into the river of creativity running just below the surface of your daily life. It can quench your spirit and answer your soul’s longing.

Using an array of art materials and playful practices, students will be gently guided in step-by-step processes designed to build comfort in expressing their own visual and kinetic language. Emphasis is on exploration and experimentation rather than product, and the non-judgmental practices of listening and allowing. In addition to visual media, we use breath, movement, sound, writing, meditation, and poetry to shift into the quiet space from which art simply flows.

    Long Circle

    facilitated by Susie Garland

If you’re going to be an artist, all life is your subject. All your experience is part of your art. A youngster told me recently that he was going to give himself a year to see if he has talent. A year! It takes a lifetime to see what you have. Art is total engagement.
    ~ Ben Shahn

In our abundant and busy lives, it is challenging to find opportunities to deeply explore our creative impulses. Long Circle is your opportunity! It is LONG in that we have the luxury of time to dive deep into Art & Soul’s practices of play, authentic movement, sounding, and intuitive art making. These practices allow us to slip out of our everyday mind and drop down into a more centered listening space out of which creation flows. It is a CIRCLE because we create in community. We share the weekend with fellow explorers in an atmosphere of safety and non-judgment. We are all creative beings, each with our own medium and unique voice. We are writers, dancers, story tellers, painters, crafters, players, and much more. Join the circle. You will be glad you did!

We recommend that students first take the Creative Arts Discovery & Practice class before signing up for Long Circle, but if you feel you are ready, please contact us.

Take a Dip in Fabric-Dyeing Fun!

One-day workshop with visiting artist Lexie Abra Johnson (plus optional half-day open-studio dye play)

This day-long workshop will cover multiple fabric dyeing processes including indigo vat, fiber reactive MX procion dye, and thiox color discharge. Each participant will learn how to set up and care for an indigo vat, how to mix MX dye solution, and prepare a thiox discharge pot. Shibori, low-water immersion, and ombre dyeing techniques will be explored so students will leave with many of their own samples of these processes along with recipes and info on where to order supplies. Come spend the day experimenting and you’ll leave with new techniques to weave into and inspire your own artistic practice. We will finish the day with a “show & share” of our samples and ideas!

Space is limited so register early. No previous fabric dyeing experience is necessary to participate, although those with experience are welcome, too!

Supply fees cover all necessary dyes and chemicals, and each participant will receive a couple yards of plain white print cloth with which to experiment. Some extra fabrics and shibori tools will be provided. Old shirt smocks will be available in the studio for your use as well. Participants should bring a sketchbook and apron, and wear clothing that can get messy and dye-splattered. Feel free to bring extra fabrics or yarns for additional experimentation (100% cotton, silk, rayon, & wool work best), including some plaid flannel shirts for use in a cool color-removal process. Your extra fabrics can be remnants or clothing, pillowcases, scarves, bags, or other all-natural fabric items.

As an added bonus, those who complete the day-long workshop can return the following day for a half-day Open Studio (details below).

    About Lexie:
Growing up in the mountains of southeastern Idaho and the Black Hills of South Dakota, Lexie Abra Johnson was greatly influenced by her rural surroundings. Her parents chose to live a simplified “close to the earth” lifestyle, so she was taught to reuse, use up, and make do. She took a meandering road to college and had the chance to explore many paths. In 2015 Lexie received her BFA in the Fiber Department of the Kansas City Art Institute. While much of her work uses traditional textile processes such as quilting, embroidery, and surface design, she also uses clay and other mediums, as well as performance and relational aesthetics. Lexie was a recent Artist-in-Residence at Yellow Bird Art Farm and currently works as Technician and Lecturer at the Kansas City Art Institute Fiber Department where she is inspired by students every day.

While in Nashville, Lexie is teaching a Winterim semester at Harpeth Hall High School where her work will be exhibited in the Marnie Sheridan Gallery. The public is invited to a reception celebrating Lexie’s work in the gallery on Sunday, January 8, 3 - 5 pm. More at www.lexieabra.com.

What may, at first, sound like a stretch to some, will likely become ease and grace-filled through Rain's thoughtful facilitation and an integration of spiritual practices rooted in both Tantra and Peruvian Shamanism. Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for gentle movement, and bring a small personal item for the temporary altar. You may bring your journal, or paper and pen can be provided.
