Total Engagement: The Long Circle Artist Group

taught by Arunima Orr

If you’re going to be an artist, all life is your subject. All your experience is part of your art. A youngster told me recently that he was going to give himself a year to see if he has talent. A year! It takes a lifetime to see what you have. Art is total engagement.
~ Ben Shahn

The Long Circle Artist Group (LCAG) is an advanced group that exists to serve those who have demonstrated a commitment to their art life, and who wish to develop the practices, techniques, inner connections, vision, artistry and hardiness that will lead to creating works of art over time. Our artists are writers, musicians and storytellers, photographers and multimedia performers as well as visual artists in all visual arts media—drawing, painting, collage, clay and three-dimensional play and installation.

The LCAG meets on three-day weekends. In order to be a member of the LCAG, you must attend two of the four weekends scheduled in a session. You may attend all weekends, space permitting.

Prerequisite: Creative Arts Practice or Year-Long and approval of instructor.

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

taught by Deanie French

Drawing is a language as important as reading, but most people never learn it because of the bias in our society toward left-brain learning and processing. Drawing is our right-brain language, the balance to our left-brain verbal skills. Drawing is just as complex and sophisticated. It simply utilizes the gifts of the other side of our brain.

In this class, we will practice many right-brain exercises, based on the work of Betty Edwards, that will "shift" us into the right brain, which is the visual, spatial, concrete, relational, holistic part of the brain. Once there, drawing is a natural, flowing process. All humans possess the capacity to draw. It's about learning how to see and letting your hand follow your eye. We will also explore perspective, shading, proportion, and composition.

By the end of eight weeks, not only will you be amazed at your drawings, but you will also experience a sense of joy, empowerment and confidence that comes with meeting a challenge and acquiring new skills.

For beginning and intermediate students. No drawing experience necessary.

Time & Date
Wednesdays, January 11 - February 29 (8 weeks)
9:30 am - 12 noon

Fee
$295 (Co-op $250); additional fee for model TBA

We will have an opportunity to create our own set-ups, work from the model, portraits, experiment with other media, work with scale ... including large scale drawings.

Prerequisite: previous drawing experience or familiarity with Betty Edwards' course Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain.

Time & Date

Explore the beauty and mystery of symmetry, simplicity, precision, and surprise through demonstration and hands-on play.
